people to play Indian music as only a virtuoso sarod player can do In clubs the DJ s play the records but to listen to live classical music played by an Indian that is something new for Riga Here Sanjay interviewed several times for newspapers and magazines Here are a few extracts from the interview Music and rhythm is just waves he says You can of course make a diagram of music you can make a drawing but the main thing is the waves I feel whether you understand the music or not This feeling should be in both of us in the musician and in the listener in the teacher and in the pupil And how did your own way in the music start I was singing from the very childhood From the early age I saw the sitar saw the tabla but these instruments did not attract me At the age of nine and a half I came to a man who was playing the sarod I thought this is the instrument that I want to learn to play They tried to warn me because it is a very difficult instrument but I was only a child Many start learning to play it but quit They said if you want to learn you should be very persistent And I agreed So greatly sarod had impressed me I was a diligent pupil for five years I made a hut on the roof of house and was sitting there days and nights practising And after five years of labour I went to Delhi and met the great master Ustad Amjad Ali Khan His name shines on our planet like the sun Everybody playing the sarod or the sitar today are his pupils or the pupils of his followers You have been teaching the sarod and the tabla for many years Can a western man get a perfect command of Indian musical art I have many splendid pupils Nature is genorous to everybody almost everybody has feelings On rare occasions somebody is blind or an invalid But mostly everybody has the sense of rhythm Therefore you do not need to be born particularly talented almost everybody can reach some level in acquiring the music skills Still I should remark that my teaching system is basically different from the one widespread in India My teacher was a real father for me It was full devotion Even now if he chooses to call me I will quit all my work and will come But my pupils work they have friends and girl friends They live a veried life Therefore the progress in their studies is slow But I was learning for about eight years I received a grant and could do without having to earn my living Until the age of 22 I was living a life of a monk Music seemed so wonderfull to me that I did not care about entertainment or even about the girls I thought if I ever
